Ms Blakeys Piano Studio art

Welcome to

Ms. Blakey's Music Studio

My music studio is home-based and located in USC/Exposition Park neighborhood near downtown Los Angeles. I'm currently accepting new students for private piano instruction, at my studio or in your home, at beginner and intermediate skill levels.

My lessons involve all facets of music, from theory and ear training, to performance and technique. But most importantly, I provide my students the highest quality piano instruction possible. It is my desire to see all my students excel in their piano playing & musical abilities and to develop the music within them.

Learning to play an instrument is a beautiful gift you can carry throughout your entire life.

"Music has always been a major part of my life for as long as I can remember".

I started singing in the children's choir at my church in Louisville, KY at age 6 and in the 3rd grade I began taking violin, piano, clarinet and voice lessons. I sang in school choruses and played clarinet in Junior High School Marching Band and continued taking piano and voice lessons throughout high school.

transy logoI'm a well-rounded musician with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) from Transylvania University of Lexington, KY (Studio Art and Classical Voice). I also studied at Los Angeles City College, Musicians Institute logo 418FCDA5El Camino College, Santa Monica College (Commercial Voice, Piano, Guitar and Music Theory), Musicians Institute of Los Angeles (Bass Performance) and CA State University Dominguez Hills (Voice). I plan to get my Master of Arts degree in Music within the next couple of years.

My teaching background consists of 10 years as an Independent Contractor. For 5 years I taught classroom recorder and general music to elementary school children in the Inglewood, Lynwood, and Los Angeles school districts through Just Lovin' Music Studios, Inc. (JLMS). I currently serve at JLMS Studio as Program Developer, Coordinator, and I teach Group Keyboard for Beginners grades 3-7. I developed the Recorder Fusion Youth Ensemble program for grades 3-8 at Frederick K.C. Price Christian Schools of Los Angeles (2014-2015) and I currently teach beginning piano and music theory as a substitute teacher at SESA Saturday Music Conservertory of Los Angeles (2007 to present). From time to time I tutor undergraduate music students and members in my church choir in music theory, musicianship, and ear training.

Page Design Fashion Logo 250I am a member of the Sacred Praise Chorale (SPC) of Faithful Central Bible Church in Inglewood, CA and I'm often selected to sing at paid and volunteer christian events in Los Angeles.

I'm also a graphic designer and web developer at my studio Page Design, which I founded in 2000.

Playing an Instrument Benefits Your Brain

Music and the Brain

In this highly informative short video created for TED-Ed, Dr. Collins and animator Sharon Colman Graham cleverly sum up how playing an instrument benefits your brain and examines some of the long-term positive effects of this.

When you listen to music, multiple areas of your brain become engaged and active. But when you actually play an instrument, that activity becomes more like a full-body brain workout. What's going on? Anita Collins explains the fireworks that go off in musicians' brains when they play, and examines some of the long-term positive effects of this mental workout.
